What the big deodorant companies don’t want you to know...
I’m sure you’ve heard people say “if you see something on the label you can’t pronounce, don’t eat it” and I’m sure you’ve also heard “what goes on your body goes in your body!”. So this probably makes you wonder what exactly you’re putting into your body through the use of conventional deodorants and antiperspirants, right?
First off, let’s make it clear… what goes on your skin DOES go into your bloodstream. A study published by the American Journal of Public Health looked at the absorption rate of chemicals found in drinking water and found that our skin absorbed 64% of the contaminants . Even more alarming was a different study that found the armpits have an absorption rate of 100% .
It’s no wonder nicotine, estrogen, testosterone and some pain medications are administered in forms of patches, gels and creams to be applied to the skin! So what does this mean to us, the average consumer?
Well, that’s a good question. We must acknowledge that not all chemicals have adverse health effects, in fact many are harmless. But not all of them are, and researching every single "unpronounceable ingredient" is extremely time consuming.
For example, Parabens which are in most conventional deodorants as a preservative are known endocrine disruptors (mess with the regulation of hormones in your body)  . Parabens have weak estrogen-like properties, a hormone known to cause breast cells (both normal and cancerous) to grow and divide. Certain conditions that increase the presence of estrogen (like not having children, late menopause, obesity, etc.) have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer . Part of what makes Parabens so scary, is that you may not even know you’re applying these hormone disruptors every day… under the ingredient “Fragrance/Parfum” companies are allowed to avoid disclosing the ingredients they use as under the guise of a "trade secret".
Beyond parabens, there has been lots of buzz around Aluminum with respect to it causing Alzheimer’s disease, and increasing the risk of cancer. Research has shown that Aluminum levels in the breasts of those diagnosed with breast cancer significantly higher than those without breast cancer . With respect to Alzheimer's Disease, from 1911 until today experimental evidence has repeatedly demonstrated that chronic Aluminum intoxication reproduces the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease .
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Not only is there much more research on the adverse health effects of Aluminum and Parabens, but as you move down the list of ingredients on a conventional deodorant, more and more red flags arise. To keep this blog short and sweet, we won’t dive in to every harmful ingredient out there like propylene glycol, phthalates, Triclosan…
